Words of Inheritance

John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John reveals that The “Word of God” and Jesus Himself are synonymous. In other words as God speaks, when God speaks, it is absolute Truth and Authority. Such was the life of Jesus. He came into the world as absolute truth and authority, not to condemn the world but so that the world through Him might be saved, (John 3:17). He offers in this salvation an inheritance of Life over death for all who call on Him as Savior.

Our inheritance, because we know Christ is Life! Our inheritance therefore is the living Word of God which always represents Truth and Authority. As we claim this truth and authority from God through Christ alone, we must always be careful to walk in that truth instead of a perversion of the truth which the enemy will counterfeit without relent.

God’s Word is full of promises for His people who walk in obedience. And without fail, God will keep His promises because His perfection and Holy nature will not allow otherwise. These promises represent our inheritance from God as we follow Him and submit our lives under His authority. These promises are our “Inheritance Words”.

God has spoken inheritance words for all of His children. Promises for a hope and future! Look at Jeremiah 29:11…

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Though originally spoken from the Prophet to the Jewish Nation of Israel, when we were engrafted into that nation of people through Christ, we also became heirs to their promises from God.

And throughout the New Testament we also find many inheritance words that come directly from the living Word of God. Look at Romans 8:31-39. Here we see the promise that if we are for God, nothing can separate us from God. And because nothing can stand against God, nothing can stand against us!

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Here’s a fact: God’s enemy is our enemy and the spiritual nature of this enemy has declared war on the living Word of God and our inheritance words found there. This is why we see such a disdain in the World for the Bible. This is why the Bible is actually banned in many countries. This is why there is a continual push for the taking down of Scriptures and anything related to God’s Word in the Public square. This is why many school systems discourage and even attempt to ban students from any activity related to reading or studying the Bible.

Our Spiritual enemy knows the power that is contained in the living Word of God. It is the power to transform us from Spiritual weaklings into a Powerhouse of fearless individuals who will stand against an enemy who can’t possibly match the power of the ONE who has saved us!

The Son and Daughter of God who understands and has claimed this inheritance for life is not concerned about resistance, because they know what their inheritance Word says for them. It is inconceivable to them that God cannot win a battle. Therefore, ultimately for us who walk in obedience to the Lord, we have chosen to be on the winning Team – God’s Team! Why would we choose anything else?

In Numbers chapters thirteen and fourteen we see what happens when a Son of God acts on the truth of His inheritance from God. Look what the Lord says about Caleb:

24 But My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring him into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it.

And what was the “different spirit” that Caleb had which set him apart from others? It was his claim of inheritance from God which understood the promise of Romans chapter 8, written hundreds of years later! It was the Truth that because he stands for God and moves forward for the sake of God, NOTHING can stop Him!

We must also adopt this spirit which Caleb unleashed as he moved boldly into the Promised Land. If we want to move into God’s Promised Land for us, we must understand the Promise of God and know that if He has promised it, He WILL be faithful to deliver it. The question is not about His ability to deliver it; the question is about our willingness to stand firm for Him in that delivery. Like Caleb we must have the warrior spirit that knows I CAN NOT LOSE. Like Caleb we must be faithful and allow Him to go before us into the battle, all the while claiming victory, even as He is in the process of winning the battle.

Caleb and all the faithful followers of the Lord that we know of throughout history understood this:

“When you stand against me, you are standing against God which means you are in His way – not mine. And if you stand against Him then you are destined for failure, removal and even utter destruction! … Are you sure that you want to stand against My God?”

Look again now at Romans 8:31-33…

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies.

As we adopt and deepen the practice of claiming our inheritance Words from God, we’ll find a new dimension of hope and certainty about our future which depends entirely on Him. This brings a reality of two truth principles which becomes a permanent fixture in our perspective related to all things in life:

1. Inheritance Words are a critical point of certainty in God’s relationship with me.
2. Inheritance Words keep me through the circumstances of life that might otherwise defeat and overwhelm me.

For example, in Romans chapter eight, as I claim these principles based on God’s promises, I learn to assert the following:
  • From Romans 8:31 I ask: If God is for me, who can be against me?
  • From Romans 8:33 I declare: If someone brings a charge against me they are actually bringing a Charge against God, therefore they are hopeless.
  • From Romans 8:34 I proclaim:  If someone condemns me, they are baseless in their condemnation because there is no condemnation for those in Christ.
  • From Romans 8:35 I ask and answer the question: Who or what will separate me from the love of Christ? No one and No thing!

God’s Inheritance Words are His promises and they are designed to call us up into a deeper place of relationship with Him. The more we trust in and and take a stand for the truth of His promises, the deeper our relationship will go.

Let me suggest to you, that if you have somehow taken for granted, overlooked, or dismissed the incredible TRUTH of God’s love for you and what His promises are for you, it’s not to late to begin claiming your inheritance from Him. Live life based on His promises for you and every perspective on life that you have will change!

Your Inheritance Words from Him can save your life!
